Mission & Mendate
It is time to change this. LEAL Institute is committed to the conviction that lasting improvements in global health can only be achieved when the knowledge, experience, and voice of those living and working within these systems are placed at the centre of policy and practice.
Our Mission
The name LEAL captures the institute’s three-part mandate: Learn, Advocate, and Leverage, as described below.
The goal of the LEAL is to Learn from the people and policymakers in South about their real problems, Advocate with the LMIC policymakers with robust evidence, so that they can make informed decisions, and Leverage the local talent and potential to nurture their character and confidence, so that they can present their perspectives and positions in the national and global debates.
To fulfill its mission, LEAL Institute will
- Conduct, commission, and produce high-quality analytical work on the policy and political topics that are hindering the change in health policy and performance of health systems.
- Publish papers on priority topics related to prevailing mindsets in prestigious journals to change the mindsets, with the ultimate purpose to influence the policy and practice.
- Engage with emerging leaders to support them in the generation and use of local knowledge, including appreciation of the potential and power of Tacit Knowledge (knowledge embedded in lived experience and practice, as distinct from codified academic knowledge); and
- Use art and history to better understand the challenges of population health to find local and sustainable solutions.
